Well, something in the hard drive subsystem is bad, anyway. It could be the controller, the power supply or even the ribbon cable too. The quick check is to try that test on that drive in a completely different system to see if its the drive or not. > I hestitate to mention this ( it might effect > the answer you would have given), Its important information. > but Windows won't boot properly. It may well be that the system has a serious problem and it isnt just the hard drive. > Any help in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated. Try the drive in a completely different system to see if the drive is bad or not. Rod Speed, Dec 7, 2003 #2 Advertisements Show Ignored Content Want to reply to this thread or ask your own question? It worked fine until about six months back when he called to complain he had lost a major portion of the files on the drive. He recovered from this on his own and I didn't make a visit. Yesterday, I was setting up his new error 0112 UPS and I noticed his drive was reported as 48 Gigabytes in FDisk and 120 Gigabytes in Disk Management. Actual usable space was 48 Gigs. Long story short, I have now done a DOD erase and an RCMP erase and I still can't get more than 48 Gigabytes out of this drive. Any suggestions about what could have happened here? I've never see anything like this before. Alex Ethridge, Sep 30, 2006 #3 Bob Cerelli Joined: Nov 2, 2002 Messages: 22,468 Depending on the version of FDISK you are using, it can report incorrect partition sizes with these larger drives. I would not take that as the actual size of the drive. Disk Management which does report it correctly is the one to go by. Bob Cerelli, Sep 30, 2006 #4 Alex Ethridge Thread Starter Joined: Apr 10, 2000 Messages: 8,790 In this case, Disk Management is wrong for sure. Western Digital Lifeguard Tools reports no errors on extensive diagnostics; but, on writing zeros to the drive, it says (the last line is the only one that really matters): ===== begin report ===== 09/30/2006, 10:27:18 SELECTED OPTION - "SMART STATUS" SELECTED DRIVE - Model : WDC WD1200BB-00CAA0 S/N : WD-WMA8C1204044 Firmware : 16.06V16 C H S : 232581 16 63 Capacity : 120G Drive : 0 Port: 0xE400 RESULTS - "NO ERRORS FOUND" ERROR/STATUS CODE = 0000 09/30/2006, 10:32:33 SELECTED OPTION - "QUICK TEST" SELECTED DRIVE - Model : WDC WD1200BB-00CAA0 S/N : WD-WMA8C1204044 Firmware : 16.06V

A Windows error is an error that happens when an unexpected condition occurs or when a desired operation has failed. When you have an error in Windows, it may be critical and cause your programs to freeze and crash or it may be seemingly harmless yet annoying.
A stop error screen or bug check screen, commonly called a blue screen of death (also known as a BSoD, bluescreen), is caused by a fatal system error and is the error screen displayed by the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems upon encountering a critical error, of a non-recoverable nature, that causes the system to "crash".
One of the biggest causes of DLL's becoming corrupt/damaged is the practice of constantly installing and uninstalling programs. This often means that DLL's will get overwritten by newer versions when a new program is installed, for example. This causes problems for those applications and programs that still need the old version to operate. Thus, the program begins to malfunction and crash.
Computer hanging or freezing occurs when either a program or the whole system ceases to respond to inputs. In the most commonly encountered scenario, a program freezes and all windows belonging to the frozen program become static. Almost always, the only way to recover from a system freeze is to reboot the machine, usually by power cycling with an on/off or reset button.
Once your computer has been infected with a virus, it's no longer the same. After removing it with your anti-virus software, you're often left with lingering side-effects. Technically, your computer might no longer be infected, but that doesn't mean it's error-free. Even simply removing a virus can actually harm your system.
Reimage repairs and replaces all critical Windows system files needed to run and restart correctly, without harming your user data. Reimage also restores compromised system settings and registry values to their default Microsoft settings. You may always return your system to its pre-repair condition.
Reimage patented technology, is the only PC Repair program of its kind that actually reverses the damage done to your operating system. The online database is comprised of over 25,000,000 updated essential components that will replace any damaged or missing file on a Windows operating system with a healthy version of the file so that your PC's performance, stability & security will be restored and even improve.
