1 10/11/2004 (7:35 am) by Linda Danet Linda Danet (3 Posts) I have been using cannot complete the cd writing wizard the XP CD burning software successfully for a couple of years. Quite suddenly, I am constantly getting the error message "Cannot Complete The CD Writing Wizard; There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable." I have tried several different brands of CD media. I have checked that the CDRW is enabled, I have slowed down the recording speed - all to no avail. I am able to read CDs in the drive, so I know it's not disconnected, I just can't burn CDs so I suspect the software. Recent changes to my PC: a) Installed XP Service Pack 2, b)Installed a 4 port USB hub c)Installed DSL d)Installed Norton Internet Security. After doing these four things, my CD burner has ceased burning CDs. Could one of these things be the cause? I have scoured the web for anyone else in a similar situation as that is how I usually solve my PC problems but this time I'm having no luck and hoping that one of you lovely people might have a clue as to what the problem might be. Thanks! Linda 2 10/11/2004 (5:13 pm) by Ray Bay Ray Bay (3949 Posts) This mysterious problem occurs in both CD Creator and Nero as the drives age. I don't know why. I think the speed reported is faster than the actual speed as the drive wears. But it can be caused by Spyware or AntiVirus settings and Norton Internet Security 2003 or 2004 have become a MAJOR problem if you have SP-2. First thing I would do is deinstall SP2. You can fix it fairly easily by reading their manual on disk or online... and adjusting your settings. We find that if we change to "copy to hard drive" and then cancel the burn-proof or burn underrun protection, the system will work fine. If it is Nero software, you may have to play with various settings. If you are using Nero, or Record Now, or BJ's, it is easier to change to CD Creator, or to upgrade to the "ultra" models of the softwear. You can buy CD Creator Basic 6 for $6.00 to $30.00... $29 at Wal-Mart. 3 10/11/2004 (10:36 pm) by Linda Danet Linda Danet (3 Posts) Thanks for the quick response. May I bug you for some clarification? When you say "deinstall SP2" do you mean for good or can I reinstall it after I fix the
780830 I have had this problem for 3+ years on 5 or 6 different computers (and using maybe 5-6 different brands of CDs) - so it is not the hardware nor the media. Always on Win-XP Home edition. This happens about 50% of the time for me and it is getting frustrating and expensive: 1. I put a blank CD in the drive. 2. WinXP recgonizes the CD and pops up the explorer window (blank of course) (if I go to my computer, and right click on the CD-drive E: and look at properties, I see the the disk has 0 bytes used, 702 MB free ) 3. I drag the files (say 600Mb worth) into the CD Drive (E:) window 4. I click the option (on the left side of the explorer http://www.geek.com/forums/topic/cannot-complete-the-cd-writing-wizard/ window) that says "Write these files to CD" ... 5. It prompts me for the CD name and I click next 6. The status bar says it is writing to CD ... 7. then after 10-15 mins I get the message "Cannot Complete the CD Writing Wizard" .. There was an error in the writing process, the disc may nolonger be usable" 8. When I check the disk properties - there are now 0 bytes free ... or sometimes 0 bytes used and 0 bytes free. http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/780830.html Nothing I can do will write the the disk and I need to toss it. AGAIN - this happens on many different computers with many different brands of disks (so it cannot be a hardware problem, or bad luck with disks). The Windows CD wizard works about 50% of the time. (so therefor I am wasting half the disk and hours of time). *** this is not just with the CD wizard - I have tried 4 different CD writing programs aside from just the Winxp CD wizard (Nero, Roxio, DirectCD and a freeware one) .. again, on 6 different computers and many different brands of CDs. Half the CDs are now expensive coasters as a result. What am I doing wrong? How can I correct this. (ie I am looking for settings etc, not for someone to sell me new software). Thanks Request for Question Clarification by denco-ga on 07 Nov 2006 13:10 PST Howdy vodguy-ga, Greatly appreciate your patience with this troubleshooting process. Chances are you have a background process that is interfering with you burning your CDs. Please review the following O'Reilly article for some general tips. http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/oreilly/windows/news/pchardnut3_1000.html Here are some XP specific tips that you should examine. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324129 Please examine the above, try the tips, especially shutting down program that are running in the background, and report back here your results. Thanks! I strongly suspect a program (antivirus, etc.) running in the background because people tend to have a favorite program that they install on their computers. Looking Forward, denco-ga - Google Answers

Edit: ( I have resolved this topic, for my computer, see the 7th post in this thread. Also, follow cd writing Basementgeek's reccommendation about deleting Prefetch files. It was easy and may work for you.) ............................................. I have been unable to burn data/audio to a CD using the 'Windows XP Writing Wizard' recently. Once the task is set in motion it stalls, and the following error message is displayed: "Cannot complete the CD Writing Wizard" (See below for error message) The Error Code is 8FFDO2IE. Microsoft suggests: "This cd writing wizard error might have been triggered by an error in another program or component of Windows". This appears to be a common problem. I have read many articles and followed suggestions as to how it might be rectified. This includes changing settings, disk brands and reducing write speed. Some have suggested the issue is associated with the installation of Windows Service Pack 2. For example:"Why does my burner fail to burn after OS is upgraded from Windows XP SP1 to SP2?">"It could be a compatibility issue. Please visit the website of the software to obtain SP2 patch files".) Others suggest the Windows CD burner is generally unreliable, and recommend using third party software, like Nero. I'm fairly satisfied that it is not related to any malware issues. All scans and Help2Go Dective were 'clean'. I have also addressed other related iissues such as: defragmented hard drive, over loaded tempory file and llack of free space on the hard drive. I did recently install Media Player 11 beta. EditWindows Media Player 11 will not burn a CD, but will play and rip music. See below screenshoot for error message.) In this article, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324129#2 , from Microsoft Support I found this: "The drive

A Windows error is an error that happens when an unexpected condition occurs or when a desired operation has failed. When you have an error in Windows, it may be critical and cause your programs to freeze and crash or it may be seemingly harmless yet annoying.
A stop error screen or bug check screen, commonly called a blue screen of death (also known as a BSoD, bluescreen), is caused by a fatal system error and is the error screen displayed by the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems upon encountering a critical error, of a non-recoverable nature, that causes the system to "crash".
One of the biggest causes of DLL's becoming corrupt/damaged is the practice of constantly installing and uninstalling programs. This often means that DLL's will get overwritten by newer versions when a new program is installed, for example. This causes problems for those applications and programs that still need the old version to operate. Thus, the program begins to malfunction and crash.
Computer hanging or freezing occurs when either a program or the whole system ceases to respond to inputs. In the most commonly encountered scenario, a program freezes and all windows belonging to the frozen program become static. Almost always, the only way to recover from a system freeze is to reboot the machine, usually by power cycling with an on/off or reset button.
Once your computer has been infected with a virus, it's no longer the same. After removing it with your anti-virus software, you're often left with lingering side-effects. Technically, your computer might no longer be infected, but that doesn't mean it's error-free. Even simply removing a virus can actually harm your system.
Reimage repairs and replaces all critical Windows system files needed to run and restart correctly, without harming your user data. Reimage also restores compromised system settings and registry values to their default Microsoft settings. You may always return your system to its pre-repair condition.
Reimage patented technology, is the only PC Repair program of its kind that actually reverses the damage done to your operating system. The online database is comprised of over 25,000,000 updated essential components that will replace any damaged or missing file on a Windows operating system with a healthy version of the file so that your PC's performance, stability & security will be restored and even improve. The repair will deactivate then quarantine all Malware found then remove virus damage. All System Files, DLLs, and Registry Keys that have been corrupted or damaged will be replaced with new healthy files from our continuously updated online database.
